Why do you love your local parks and recreation? Can you answer the question? The City of Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) believe people in Harker Heights and surrounding areas can and are seeking the most creative answers during national Park and Recreation Month this July. This year, Harker Heights’ activities for Park and Recreation Month encourage everyone to show and share the love for parks and recreation. The Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting two Fun Days in the Parks. Come join us for field games, activity demos, family fun, and a chance to tell us why you love parks and recreation! Please check back frequently, as the schedule of events for both Fun Days will be posted soon!

In addition to getting involved in our Park and Recreation month programs locally, people can share their love for parks and recreation on a grander scale through the “Show UR Love” weekly photo contest on the NRPA facebook page. During each week of July, NRPA will have a different theme that people can follow to snap pictures in their local parks and recreation. Citizens can submit photos that show the love for local parks and recreation to NRPA through Facebook at to be entered into the contest. NRPA will award weekly prizes and a grand prize at the end of the month.

Clean out the house this summer and get rid of your unwanted items. The 3rd Annual City Wide Garage Sale is an opportunity for citizens of Harker Heights to have a garage sale that waives the usual $5 permit fee. You must register for permit in person.
Address, time of garage sale, and big sale items will be posted on the city’s website and all City buildings the week of the garage sale for free advertisement. Please feel free to advertise on your own through signage and local newspapers.
In case of inclement weather the City Wide Garage Sale will be scheduled on Saturday, August 10, 2013. Call 254-953-5660 for weather status of City Wide Garage Sale.

Have your children spend the summer with the Parks & Recreation staff filled with fun activities including indoor and outdoor games, movies, board games, visits to the park and much more. Registration starts on May 4, 2013 at 12 pm at the Harker Heights Recreation Center.|

Come join the Parks and Recreation and Library for a movie night at the Carl Levin Outdoor Pool. Enjoy a fun-filled evening of eating free snacks and swimming while watching a movie on a big screen. Family Dive-Ins is open to the whole family. All participants will be required to pay gate admission rates. Pool passes will not cover City sponsored events.
