Public Safety Explorer Post

The Harker Heights Public Safety Explorers Post 247 meet each Wednesday at the Harker Heights Police Department from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The objective of the Explorers is to provide an in-depth, first-hand experience in all related fields of public safety (law enforcement, emergency medical services, and firefighting). All Explorer training is in accordance with the policies of the Learning for Life program, the City of Harker Heights, the Harker Heights Police Department and Harker Heights Fire Department. This program is intended for young adults ages 14 (who have completed the 8th grade) to 20 (until their 21st birthday) who have expressed a sincere interest in the public safety fields as a career and who qualify for membership in the organization.

Our commitment is to improve relations between the Police Department and Fire Department staff and the youth in the City of Harker Heights through a close working relationship with youth who have expressed an interest in or are curious about law enforcement, emergency medicine or firefighting careers. It is also to allow Explorers an opportunity to become closely involved with public safety work through specialized training, special details and community programs and service.

The program provides for the opportunity for young people to serve the community, develop leadership skills and provides an attitude of support from peers and adults during the maturing process. At regularly scheduled Post meetings, Explorers have the opportunity to learn first hand, through an academic, recreational and social program, all areas of public safety. A hands-on approach gives young adults the opportunity to work alongside police officers and firefighters and learn important facts about emergency situations that will assist them in making a decision about a career in public safety.

The Explorer Post  further enhances the Explorers education by having the explorer participate in ride along to help re-enforce their classroom and practical exercise training by placing them in certain real world situations (such as traffic control, and first-aid application). The post also furthers the explorer’s education by competing in local and state Explorer competitions, thereby enhancing their training by placing the explorer in mock real world scenarios (such as traffic stops, investigating domestic violence, robbery in progress, crime prevention evaluations, and building searches) to continue to build on the “team” concept.
